Bali is not a single venue. It is a category — six distinct microclimates, three quite different cultural pockets, and an industry that has been hosting international weddings for thirty years. The island's strength as a destination is that it makes the impossible feel ordinary; its weakness, if you do not know the geography, is that all of it can look the same in photos. This guide is for couples deciding whether Bali is the right choice — and if so, which Bali.
When to marry on the island
Dry season runs May through October. Inside that, June through August are the most reliable months — clear evenings, breezes that hold the mosquitoes back, low chance of a downpour during a ceremony. September is the editor's favourite: still dry, fewer crowds, lower rates.
April and November are the shoulder months — typically dry, occasionally not. We have done weddings in both with no rain at all and one in late April that needed a Plan B at the last minute. If you book outside dry season, build the Plan B into the venue contract.
Legalities, and how couples actually handle them
The honest answer: most international couples marry civilly in their home country before flying in, then hold a symbolic ceremony in Bali. This is the cleanest route — your paperwork is done in your own language, on familiar timelines, and the Bali ceremony is purely about the day.
Legal weddings in Indonesia require both partners to declare a religion (the country does not register civil marriage in the secular sense), and the paperwork takes weeks. It is possible — we have helped couples through it — but the trade-off is rarely worth it when civil ceremonies at home take an afternoon.
What it costs, roughly
A 100-guest Bali wedding at a wedding-grade estate, full-service, lands between $80,000 and $180,000 USD. The wide range is real — the difference between $80k and $180k is the venue tier (private estate vs. resort buyout), the food (set menu vs. tasting), and the talent (local DJ vs. flown-in headliner).
Venue and food are the two large lines; together they are usually 50–60% of the budget. Flowers, photo/video, and music are each meaningful single-digit percentages. Stationery, hair/makeup, and gifting tend to be smaller than couples expect.

Choosing your part of the island
The four destinations couples consider most often each have a distinct character:
- Uluwatu. Cliffs, ocean, golden hour every evening. Suited to dramatic ceremonies and modern architecture. Drive time to Ngurah Rai is short. Most photographed.
- Ubud. Jungle, rivers, terraces. Suited to softer, slower weddings with a cultural texture. Drive from the airport is an hour-plus, but the silence is the point.
- Tabanan / Canggu. Rice fields, surf coast, the most relaxed of the four. Suited to younger guest lists and couples who want a beach component without Uluwatu's drama.
- Nusa Dua. Resort coast, big lawns, easiest for older guests. Suited to multi-day events where comfort and walkability matter more than the postcard.
Cultural choreography
Most Bali venues will offer a Hindu blessing — a melukat water ceremony, an offering at a temple on the property, or a brief ceremony led by a priest. These are not obligatory; many couples include one because it is meaningful to do something rooted in the place, not adjacent to it.
Speak with your planner about how to invite this without making it ornamental. Done well, it is a quiet, generous moment. Done badly, it is content. The difference is whether your guests are told why it is happening.

Logistics for guests
Most international guests fly into Denpasar via Singapore, Doha, or Dubai. Build in a buffer day on the front and back of the trip — Saturday weddings work best with guests arriving Thursday and leaving Sunday or Monday.
Visa on arrival applies to most nationalities for 30 days. For older guests, a private driver with one bag of waters in the back is a small spend that quietly raises the entire trip.
