Can you legally marry in Koh Samui?
The honest answer for most couples is that the ceremony and the registration are two separate things — and separating them is normal, not a compromise.

Most couples marry symbolically at the venue
The ceremony you plan — the aisle, the vows, the photographs — is almost always a symbolic one held at the villa or resort. It carries no legal weight anywhere, and that is the normal, expected choice for international couples in Thailand. Nothing about it looks or feels different from a legal ceremony.
The legal registration is a separate, paperwork-only errand
To marry legally in Thailand, both partners obtain an affirmation of freedom to marry from their own embassy in Bangkok, have it translated and legalised by the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs, then register at any district office (amphur). It is an administrative day in Bangkok, not a ceremony, and it is usually done before or after the celebration — not on the wedding day.
A Buddhist blessing can be added to either
Many couples add a morning monk blessing — nine monks, chanting, an offering — before the Western-style ceremony. It is ceremonial rather than legal, and the venue arranges it locally.

- The figure shown on each venue page. Private villas usually price a multi-night stay with the wedding day included; resorts price the event separately from rooms.
- Catering and bar
- Charged per head and the largest variable in the budget. It moves with menu style — grazing and Thai stations sit well below a plated Western four-course — and again with whether the bar is on consumption or a package.
- Wedding planner or on-site coordinator
- Either a percentage of total spend or a flat fee. In Thailand a local planner is close to essential for a villa wedding, where nothing is provided in-house.
- Décor, florals and furniture
- The single biggest lever you control. A villa wedding starts with an empty lawn, so tables, chairs, linen, lighting and a marquee or wet-weather cover are all rentals.
- Photography and film
- Priced by coverage hours and crew size; day-before and day-after shoots are commonly added on the Andaman coast.
- Sound, lighting and entertainment
- Generator-backed sound is standard at villas. Note that many residential areas enforce an amplified-music curfew — ask before you plan a late party.
- Guest transfers
- Villa weddings are rarely walkable. Budget minibus transfers between hotels and the venue for the whole guest list.
- Hair, make-up, celebrant, marriage licence errands
- Individually small, collectively not. The Bangkok embassy trip, if you are marrying legally, is its own line.
