A Bali wedding comes down to three decisions: the month, the setting and the number of people you are bringing. This planner puts them side by side — the island's seasons and sunsets month by month, then every venue we list that holds your party, priced from its own published rates.
Three decisions, in this order
Most couples start with a venue and work backwards. It is quicker the other way round. The month decides the weather and, through peak-season supplements, the price of almost everything; the setting decides which Bali appears in your photographs; and the guest count decides which venues are possible at all. Settle the three in that order and a list of 107 Bali venues becomes three or four worth visiting.
Everything below is built from the venues' own published rates and capacities and from the island's sunsets, calculated for each month — so the planner moves with the venues, not with an article that was right the year it was written.
The month: two seasons, and a sunset that barely moves
April to October is dry; July and August are the most reliable and the most booked. January to March is the wet season. Within the dry months, April to June is the sweet spot — dry and clear, but not yet at peak crowds or peak rates — while November and December bring the afternoon downpours that move ceremonies earlier in the day.
Because Bali lies about eight degrees south of the equator, the sun sets within the same hour all year. On the Bukit cliffs at Uluwatu it goes down at about 6:05 pm at its earliest (May and June) and about 6:45 pm at its latest (January and February). The time of a golden-hour ceremony therefore moves by well under an hour across the year. What moves more is the direction: in June the sun sets west-north-west, in December west-south-west.

The setting: cliff, beach or jungle
The island you see in your photographs is decided here. Each setting has its own coast, its own light and its own practicalities:
- Cliffside — 27 venues. Most stand on the Bukit peninsula — Uluwatu, Jimbaran, Ungasan and Pandawa — where limestone falls straight to the Indian Ocean. They are the island's most requested settings for a sunset ceremony; the exposure that makes them beautiful also brings wind, which decides florals, drapery and exactly where a ceremony can sit.
- Beachfront — 43 venues. They open onto the sand, from Canggu, Tabanan, Nusa Dua, Saba and Seseh. A beach wedding trades the cliff's drama for barefoot ceremonies and a reception that runs on into the sea breeze.
- Jungle & rice fields — 17 venues. Rice terraces, river valleys and palm-shaded estates around Ubud, Canggu and Tabanan. Ubud sits inland and higher, so it is cooler and greener and rains more readily than the coast in any month; valley venues also mean steps and steep paths, worth walking yourself on a site visit.

What the venue rate includes — and what sits on top
A Bali venue rate is rarely the whole wedding. Resorts and villas price very differently — a resort package can include a set menu and styling, a private villa usually starts with an empty lawn — so read each venue's own inclusions before comparing two numbers. These are the lines that make up the rest of the day:
- Venue hire. The figure shown on each venue page. Bali villas usually require a minimum multi-night stay around the wedding day; resorts price the event separately from rooms.
- Catering and bar. Per head, and the biggest single variable. Indonesian import duty on wine and spirits makes the bar unusually expensive relative to food — a beer-and-wine bar changes the total materially.
- Wedding planner. Villa weddings in Bali are built from scratch on the day; a local planner is the difference between a schedule and a scramble.
- Décor, florals and furniture. Bali's floral and production trade is deep and comparatively good value — this is where the island's budget goes furthest.
- Photography and film. Priced by coverage hours and crew; sunrise or day-after sessions at a second location are common.
- Sound, lighting and entertainment. Ask about the venue's amplified-music curfew before planning a late reception — several Bukit and Canggu estates have firm end times.
- Guest transfers. Bali traffic is the planning constraint nobody expects. Budget transfers and, more importantly, build real buffer into the timeline.
- Ceremony, celebrant and cultural elements. Celebrant fees, a Balinese blessing, offerings and a legal-paperwork line if you are marrying legally in Indonesia.
Legal or symbolic
For almost every international couple the Bali ceremony is a symbolic one, and nothing about it looks or feels different on the day.
- Indonesian law recognises religious marriage only. There is no civil marriage in Indonesia. A legal wedding requires both partners to share one of the six state-recognised religions — Islam, Protestantism, Catholicism, Hinduism, Buddhism or Confucianism — and to marry under its rites, with the marriage then registered at the civil registry office.
- Which is why most international couples marry symbolically. A symbolic ceremony at the villa or resort — celebrant, vows, rings, sand or water ritual — is the standard choice and is what nearly every Bali wedding photograph you have seen actually is. The legal marriage happens at home, before or after.
- A Balinese Hindu blessing is a ceremony, not a registration. The temple-style blessing many couples add — pemangku, offerings, holy water — is a cultural ceremony. It is deeply meaningful and entirely non-legal.
- If you do want the legal route, start early. Legal marriage in Indonesia involves a Certificate of No Impediment from your embassy in Jakarta, religious documentation, translations and registration within a set window after the ceremony. It takes months, not weeks. Confirm the current requirements with your embassy — this is general guidance, not legal advice.
When to book for 2027
Nine to twelve months for peak season. The named clifftop estates on the Bukit are the first to go.
Twelve months for a peak-season Saturday. Uluwatu's cliff-edge chapels and lawns are the most requested in Indonesia. A weekday, or a date in late September or October, opens the shortlist again — the last week of September is still dry and noticeably better value.
Getting there and getting around
- Airport. Bali Ngurah Rai (DPS), in the island's south
- To Uluwatu. About 45–75 minutes from DPS depending on traffic and the exact clifftop
- To Canggu / Seminyak. About 45–90 minutes north of the airport — the most traffic-affected route on the island
- To Ubud. About 75–105 minutes inland
- Plan for. Traffic is the single most underestimated factor in a Bali timeline. Every transfer needs genuine buffer, not an optimistic estimate
