A European wedding is chosen as much by its calendar and its paperwork as by its view. This planner sets six estates side by side — the season at each, the length of a June evening, whether the ceremony can be legal, and what each one publishes for your number.
Six estates, two countries
We list 6 wedding estates in Europe — 3 in Italy and 3 in France — and each is a different kind of wedding. Villa Clara (Rome, up to 30 guests), Chateau de Villette (Paris, up to 200 guests), Villa Astor (Sorrento, up to 200 guests), Villa Balbiano (Lake Como, up to 200 guests), La Bastide de Gordes (Gordes, up to 120 guests) and Manoir de Chivré (Normandy, up to 200 guests).
What they share is a season and a set of rules. Italy will legally marry a foreign couple; France, in practice, will not. Both close most outdoor venues from November to April, and both lose a fortnight to the August holidays. Choose with those three facts in hand and the comparison becomes simple.
The season: May to early October, with long evenings
In Italy, May, June, September and early October are the wedding months. July is hot, August is Ferragosto, and winter closes most outdoor venues. In France the window is late May to early October: Provençal lavender peaks from late June to mid-July, and château gardens are at their best in June and September.
The light is the European wedding's great luxury. In June the sun sets at about 9:15 pm on Lake Como, 8:45 pm in Rome and 10:00 pm outside Paris — a dinner can begin in daylight. By mid-September the sun sets an hour and 40 minutes earlier on the lake, and the light is softer.

The estates side by side
Each estate prices a wedding its own way — Villa Balbiano and Villa Astor for a single day or with a stay of one or two nights, Château de Villette for the event alone or with a stay, La Bastide de Gordes as a full buy-out or a partial privatisation — so compare each figure with its basis, and read the inclusions on each page. For 100 guests the lightest published wedding package is €28,750 — One-Day Event Rental — up to 100 guests, at Chateau de Villette.

Legal or symbolic: Italy and France differ
The legal question decides more of the planning than any other — the paperwork, the town hall, sometimes the day itself.
Legal or symbolic
- 01
Italy will legally marry foreign couples — but the paperwork leads
A civil ceremony performed by an Italian registrar is legally binding for non-residents. You will need a nulla osta (a declaration of no impediment) from your own consulate in Italy, legalised at the local Prefettura, plus passports and birth certificates. The file is lodged with the comune ahead of the date.
- 02
Not every beautiful room is licensed
Only venues the comune has licensed for civil ceremonies can host the legal act — a private villa often is not one. Where it is not, couples hold the legal ceremony at the town hall and the real celebration at the villa, usually on consecutive days.
- 03
Catholic ceremonies carry civil weight
A Catholic wedding in an Italian church is recognised civilly, but the parish process runs through your home parish and takes months. Start it before you fix a date.
- 04
Symbolic is entirely normal here too
Plenty of couples marry legally at home and treat the Italian day as the wedding. No guest can tell the difference, and it removes every document deadline from your planning.
General guidance from the venues and couples we work with — not legal advice. Confirm the current rules with your embassy or registrar.
What sits on top of venue hire in Italy
- Venue hire. The figure shown on each venue page. Historic estates usually price an exclusive multi-day buyout rather than a single day, and accommodation on site is often included or required.
- Catering and wine. Per head, and in Italy and France frequently controlled by the venue's approved caterer. Ask early whether the list is exclusive — it sets your ceiling more than anything else.
- Planner and production. Historic properties come with real constraints — protected gardens, load-in windows, noise limits — so an experienced local planner is standard rather than optional.
- Florals, furniture and lighting. Estate rooms need less dressing than an empty lawn, but candle and lighting plans in frescoed interiors are specialist work.
- Photography and film. Priced by coverage; a next-day portrait session on the lake or the coast road is a common addition.
- Music and curfew. Amplified-music curfews are strictly enforced in Italian and French communes. It shapes the running order — confirm the venue's licensed end time before you plan the party.
- Transfers, boats and logistics. Lakeside arrivals by boat, coast-road shuttles and remote bastide access are real costs and real timing risks. Build them in early.
- Legalisation and translations. If you are marrying legally in Italy, budget consular fees, sworn translations and an interpreter on the day.

Getting there
- Lake Como. Milan Malpensa (MXP), roughly an hour by road to the lake; Linate (LIN) is similar
- Sorrento & the Amalfi Coast. Naples (NAP) — about 1h15 to Sorrento; Positano and Ravello are longer again on the coast road
- Rome. Fiumicino (FCO) — the best-connected long-haul gateway in Italy; Ciampino (CIA) for short-haul
- Paris. Charles de Gaulle (CDG) and Orly (ORY), both with global connections
- Provence. Marseille (MRS) is closest to the Luberon; Nice (NCE) serves the east and has the widest long-haul choice
- Normandy. Paris CDG, then roughly two hours west by road depending on the estate
When to book for 2027
- Lake Como. Twelve to eighteen months. The historic lakefront villas are a very short list and hold only a handful of weddings each season.
- Sorrento & the Amalfi Coast. Twelve to eighteen months for a May, June or September date. Accommodation for the guest list is the binding constraint here, not the venue.
- Rome. Twelve months for a spring or autumn Saturday.
- Paris. Twelve to eighteen months for a May–September Saturday at a named château.
- Provence. Twelve to eighteen months for a lavender-window date. Those two or three weeks are the most contested in the South of France.
- Normandy. Nine to twelve months.

Can foreigners legally marry in France?
Only a civil ceremony at a French mairie is legally binding, and one partner must have lived in that commune for at least 30 continuous days before the banns are published. For couples flying in, that residency rule is the whole story — it is why almost no destination wedding in France is a legal one.
What time is sunset on Lake Como in June?
About 9:15 pm on the 15th of June, on Italian summer time; by mid-September it is about 7:35 pm.
