The 55-guest rule: when a glasshouse becomes mandatory
Up to 55 guests can dine inside the villa. Above 55, local anti-noise rules require a pre-installed glasshouse in the gardens, rented under a direct contract with the structure company and quoted separately — it is not in any rental price. It is the single biggest jump in a Villa Balbiano budget, so settle the guest list before you compare rentals.
On the one-day rental the price covers 40 guests; above that the estate charges in steps: up to 45 adds EUR 5,750, up to 50 adds EUR 11,500, up to 55 adds EUR 17,250.
Getting ready, and who sleeps at the villa
- On the one-day rental. One Lake Como view suite on the second floor for the couple to get ready; extra suites at an extra charge. The rental runs from 10am, with the estate released by 8.30am the next morning.
- On the two- and three-day rentals. The six double suites of the Main Palazzo, for up to 12 guests. Extra rooms elsewhere on the estate take the total to 30, at an extra charge. Check-in is at 10am on the first day and checkout at 9pm on the last.
- The weekday rule. The one-day and two-day rentals are priced for weekdays; a weekend is on request, at an extra charge the estate quotes for the date.
When to marry at Villa Balbiano
May, June, September and early October. Gardens peak in late spring, the light is best in September, and the lake largely closes from November. Summer time keeps the evenings long: on 15 June the sun sets at about 9:15 pm, so golden-hour vows begin around 8:00 pm; by mid-September sunset is at about 7:35 pm.
Twelve to eighteen months. The historic lakefront villas are a very short list and hold only a handful of weddings each season.

Sunsets are calculated for the 15th of each month (local clock, summer time where it applies) and move a few minutes either side across the month. Golden-hour vows start about an hour and a quarter before sunset.
What a 50-guest weekend really costs
The venue is only part of it. For a three-day weekend for 50 guests — welcome dinner, wedding day and farewell brunch — these are the ranges in the 2027 quotes we received for exactly that weekend at the villa. Supplier figures are before VAT; the florals quotes add 22%.

The deposit and the rules that cost money
- Security deposit. EUR 35,000 on the event rentals, returned after the wedding if there is no damage. It sits outside every total on this page.
- Mandatory event extras. Power hub access, a toilet attendant service and security at every event: EUR 17,250 for the main event and EUR 11,500 for each additional one.
- Music curfew. Outdoor music ends at 9.30pm and the afterparty at 1am; each hour after that is EUR 5,750.
- Approved suppliers only. Catering, bar, flowers, lighting, sound, rentals and structures come from The Heritage Collection's approved list. You cannot bring your own caterer; we source and compare the approved ones for you.
- Approved planners only. The estate works only with approved planning agencies; each appointment is subject to its approval.
- Extras on request. Opening the main historic gate, extra hours, extra suites and kitchen access for the caterer are at an extra charge.
- Smoking. Never inside — a EUR 10,000 fine applies — and only in authorised areas outside. Smoke machines are not allowed at the afterparty.
Elopements and photo shoots at Villa Balbiano
For two, the villa rents without the event machinery: a shoot of up to two hours is EUR 8,050, an elopement or pre-wedding shoot of up to five hours without accommodation EUR 23,000 (extra time EUR 3,450 an hour), and an elopement with a night in the Lake Como view suite EUR 34,500. No services are included; the deposit is from EUR 5,000 for the shoot, from EUR 10,000 for the five-hour elopement and from EUR 15,000 with the night.
Marrying legally in Italy
- Italy will legally marry foreign couples — but the paperwork leads. A civil ceremony performed by an Italian registrar is legally binding for non-residents. You will need a nulla osta (a declaration of no impediment) from your own consulate in Italy, legalised at the local Prefettura, plus passports and birth certificates. The file is lodged with the comune ahead of the date.
- Not every beautiful room is licensed. Only venues the comune has licensed for civil ceremonies can host the legal act — a private villa often is not one. Where it is not, couples hold the legal ceremony at the town hall and the real celebration at the villa, usually on consecutive days.
- Catholic ceremonies carry civil weight. A Catholic wedding in an Italian church is recognised civilly, but the parish process runs through your home parish and takes months. Start it before you fix a date.
- Symbolic is entirely normal here too. Plenty of couples marry legally at home and treat the Italian day as the wedding. No guest can tell the difference, and it removes every document deadline from your planning.
Getting to Villa Balbiano
- Airport. Milan Malpensa (MXP), roughly an hour by road to the lake; Linate (LIN) is similar
- On the lake. Private boat transfers between villas and towns are standard — and are usually faster than the lake road, which is single-lane and slow in season
- Rail. Milan to Como or Varenna by train, then boat — an easy route for guests arriving from elsewhere in Europe
- Worth planning. Boat timings and the lake road are the two things that break a Como timeline. Both need buffer

- Stay at 55 guests or fewer. It keeps the dinner inside the villa and removes the glasshouse altogether.
- Choose the weekday rates. The one- and two-day rentals are priced for weekdays; weekends cost extra.
- Count your events. Each event after the first adds EUR 11,500 in mandatory extras — a brunch you could hold elsewhere is worth pricing both ways.
- Compare more than one florist. The floral quotes for the same weekend ran from about EUR 41,000 to EUR 154,000 — the widest spread of any line.
